I thought it would help to buy organizing bins and baskets for my kids to put their toys away.

I thought my house would be cleaner with the use of those items, but all it did was allow my kids to stuff them full of junk and never clean correctly.

There were crayons, markers, paper, crafts, puzzle pieces, and toys everywhere even though I tried to get them to organize the stuff.

I tried labels.

The problem was that when I wasn't directly helping the kids clean up, they would just throw the stuff in the closest place instead of organizing according to my pretty labels.

Then I would have to spend hours going through the baskets and bins to re-organize!

What I didn't realize was we simply had too much stuff.

We didn't have an organizing problem. We had a too much stuff problem.

The Biggest Mistake When Organizing Toys

The biggest mistake is trying to organize toys when what you truly need to do is declutter them.

The problem was that my kids never wanted to donate any of their toys.

They were attached and did not want to let go of their toys.

So, I wrote a book called The Underground Toy Society to help them realize that there may be other kids who are not as blessed as they were to have so many toys.

The book helped my kids realize that their toys deserved to be loved instead of thrown all over the floor.

My kids cleaned up better and even wanted to donate some toys to kids who did not have as many.

Fewer toys cluttering up the house means less cleaning time and more time for fun!
