Decluttering - Where Do I Begin?

Updated: Jan 28, 2023

You know you want to declutter, but you have no idea where to begin.

You see the stuff piling up, but it's too overwhelming to start.

But did you know. . .

“Over the course of an average lifetime, because of all the clutter we live in, we will spend 3,680 hours, or 153 days, searching for misplaced items.” - Joshua Becker

So not only was I wasting time procrastinating, but I was wasting time searching for stuff!

But, I felt overwhelmed and did not know where to begin.

The best thing to do when you feel overwhelmed is to start small. Clean for a small amount of time each day.

Small amounts of time really do add up over time. Soon you will see the progress and want to keep going. Then you can clean for longer periods of time.

In my house, the junk mail piles up. So if I'm feeling frustrated, I take a pile of junk mail and start shredding.

Try this paper shredder that can shred 12 sheets of paper at a time (affiliate link)*

Having a good paper shredder has helped me keep the junk mail from piling up too much.

Or, take one thing off your desk that you don't really like and donate it.

Do you really need all those mugs in your cupboard? Take one out and donate it!

One thing I recommend that you do not do is buy storage containers.

You need to clear things out of your house and stop organizing your clutter! Organizing your clutter does not help decrease your stress.

Try local groups on Facebook to offer your items for free, or sell the ones that you think might give you a few extra dollars back in your wallet.

Look up local shelters or churches in your area to see if they need any donations.

Purple Heart Green Drop* has drop off and even some pick up locations in several areas. I used this option once and they came right to my home to pick up my items! Unfortunately, they no longer offer pick up in my area, but maybe they do in your area! Please make sure to follow their donation guidelines* of what they accept.

Paper clutter is the biggest thing to pile up in my house, so if that's true for you, spend some time cleaning off the paper clutter from your desk. A few minutes a day will add up!

Happy Decluttering!
